About prazosin

About prazosin

What is prazosin?
Prazosin is prescribed to treat hypertension, either on its own or alongside other blood pressure medications. It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha‑1 blockers, which relax and widen blood vessels to improve blood flow.

Although not FDA-approved for other conditions, prazosin is often prescribed off-label to manage PTSD-related nightmares, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and Raynaud’s phenomenon.

This medication is available as oral capsules in 1 mg, 2 mg, and 5 mg strengths. It is sold under the brand name Minipress and as generic prazosin. It’s typically taken as 1 mg two or three times a day, depending on your condition. Prazosin was first approved in 1988 and remains widely prescribed in its generic form.

How to get a prazosin prescription online?

Here’s how to start your prazosin treatment through Klarity Health:

  • Visit Klarity Health: Find a licensed provider offering prazosin evaluations.
  • Book a virtual appointment: Choose a provider in your state and schedule a consultation.
  • Complete a medical review: Discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any current medications.
  • Receive your prescription: If appropriate, your provider will send the prescription to your preferred pharmacy.

How does prazosin compare to other medications?

When choosing a treatment for high blood pressure or PTSD-related symptoms, it’s helpful to compare prazosin with similar options:

MedicationUse CaseSide Effect RiskGeneric Cost (30-day)Administration
PrazosinHypertension, off-label PTSD nightmaresModerate (dizziness, syncope)~$5–$10 (low dose)Oral capsule, multiple doses daily
PropranololHypertension, migraine, anxietyModerate (fatigue, bradycardia)~$10Oral, multiple doses daily
DoxazosinHypertension, BPHSimilar to prazosin, less frequent syncope~$31Oral daily
LisinoprilHypertension, kidney protectionLow (cough, hyperkalemia)~$15–20Oral daily

Prazosin may be especially useful if you have both hypertension and PTSD symptoms. However, it carries a higher risk of first-dose dizziness and is less commonly used as a first-line option for BPH compared to newer agents.
