Understanding ADHD symptoms

There are 3 main types of ADHD — predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined ADHD. Common symptoms across types in adults include:

  • Difficulty focusing or staying focused or being restless
  • Being hyper-focused on a single task or situation
  • Procrastinating or being unable to start something
  • Fidgeting or squirming, impulsivity, and/or trouble prioritizing
  • Inattentiveness
  • Disorganization and poor time management
  • Overlooking or missing details
  • Forgetfulness
  • Low tolerance for frustration and a quick temper

Symptoms in children can be different. And there are less common ADHD symptoms in adults.

*Your provider’s recommended treatment may or may not include medication.

How ADHD is diagnosed

ADHD is diagnosed by a medical or mental healthcare professional. There’s no simple or single test. Instead, a trained, licensed provider will:

  • Take your history and interview you about your current symptoms and when they started.
  • Ask about your medical and mental health history and current status.
  • Use any of several standardized behavior rating scales, known as ADHD screeners or quality of life assessments, as criteria for evaluating you.
  • Possibly have you take psychological tests to assess your memory, executive functioning, visual and spatial skills, and/or reasoning skills.
  • Sometimes, and with your permission, talk to or interview people you know (like a caregiver or partner) who’ve seen how your symptoms impact you.

ADHD medications

The 2 main classes of ADHD medication are stimulants and non-stimulants.

Stimulants for ADHD

  • Promote alertness, focus, thought, effort, and motivation
  • Provide rapid symptom relief, often within hours of the first dose
  • Are typically the first-line treatment
  • May cause addiction and be misused

Common stimulant medications

  • Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine)
  • Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine)
  • Ritalin (methylphenidate)
  • Concerta (methylphenidate hydrochloride)
  • Focalin (dexmethylphenidate)

Non-stimulants for ADHD

  • Help with attention, working memory, impulsive control, and hyperactivity
  • Can take several weeks to be fully effective
  • Are ideal for people who can’t tolerate stimulants
  • Are less likely to cause addiction or be misused

Common non-stimulant medications

  • Strattera (atomoxetine)
  • Intuniv (guanfacine)
  • Kapvay (clonidine)
  • Qelbree (viloxazine)
  • Wellbutrin (buproprion)

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common treatment options for ADHD?

The most common treatment option for ADHD is a combination of medication (stimulants or non-stimulants) and behavioral therapy or psychoeducation. Lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, may also be recommended.

How do I know if I need medication and therapy for newly diagnosed ADHD?

A combination of the 2 is considered ideal for treating ADHD. Your provider will recommend the best treatment plan for you based on their assessment of your symptoms.

Whether your provider recommends medication alone, therapy alone, or both, you can find a medical provider to prescribe and manage ADHD medications on Klarity as well as licensed, caring therapists who offer therapy and psychoeducation. And you can always find and talk to a therapist whether you’re on medication or not.

What is behavioral therapy and how does it help with ADHD?

Behavioral therapy involves working with a therapist to develop strategies for coping with and managing ADHD symptoms. This can include techniques for organization, time management, and improving social skills, which help reduce symptoms and improve functioning.

On Klarity, you can find licensed providers who offer caring and affordable behavior therapy for people who struggle with the symptoms of ADHD.

How long does ADHD treatment usually last?

ADHD is a chronic condition and treatment is usually ongoing because you may need to take medication throughout your life. Counseling or behavioral therapy may have a shorter course as you learn coping mechanisms and life skills that you can use for years or your lifetime.

How do I find the right ADHD specialist for treatment?

Finding the right ADHD specialist involves looking for a licensed professional with experience in ADHD diagnosis and treatment. Recommendations from your primary care doctor, friends and family, online reviews, and interviewing a provider before or during your initial consultations can help you find the right provider for your needs.

Can ADHD treamtent be provided online?

Yes. You can get online therapy sessions, medication management, and support from providers trained in treating and managing ADHD symptoms, all online through an online telehealth platform, such as Klarity.

Can I get a prescription for ADHD medication online?

Yes. Licensed professionals, like those on Klarity, can prescribe ADHD medications through online consultations. Prescriptions can be sent to and filled by your local pharmacy for delivery or pick up or an online pharmacy that offers home delivery.

Is online ADHD treatment covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover in-person and online ADHD treatment. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.
