Symptoms of allergy

Your symptoms can vary, depending on how you’re exposed to the allergen. Bee stings and food and drug allergies typically cause more severe allergic reactions.

Common allergic symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Sneezing
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Stuffy nose
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy skin
  • Itchy, water eyes
  • Wheezing
  • Swelling of your throat, tongue, lips, or face
  • Trouble swallowing or breathing
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood pressure

Find a provider on Klarity Health to discuss allergy treatment and management. You and your provider can evaluate your health risks and talk through your allergy treatment options.

How is an allergy diagnosed?

To get a diagnosis for your allergy, your healthcare provider might recommend either a skin test, blood test, or both:

  • Skin test. During a skin test for allergies, a healthcare provider uses a small needle to scratch or prick the skin and expose you to tiny amounts of the proteins in your possible allergens. If you’re allergic to the substance, you will probably get a raised bump known as a hive on your skin at the test area. If you get a negative test result but your provider still thinks you might have an allergy, you might need to take an intradermal skin test. During this test, your provider injects a tiny amount of allergen into the external skin layer.
  • Blood test. A blood test for allergies measures the antibodies, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, your blood makes to get rid of the allergens. This test is called specific IgE (sIgE) blood testing, radioallergosorbent (RAST) testing, or ImmunoCAP testing. Your provider will send your blood sample to a lab to determine whether you have an allergy or sensitivity to the substance.

Getting all of this information can help your healthcare provider recommend the appropriate medication or treatment for you.
