The symptoms of depression

Types of depression include major depression, persistent depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression with psychosis, bipolar disorder, treatment-resistant depression, and others.

Symptoms common across types of depression that a treatment plan can help include:

  • Persistent sadness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
  • Changes in appetite or weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Insomnia, difficulty falling or staying asleep, or oversleeping (hypersomnia)
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating, thinking, or making decisions
  • Physical symptoms without a clear cause, such as headaches, digestive issues, or chronic pain
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Social withdrawal
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Depression left untreated is more than a mood issue, it’s a potentially dangerous, chronic condition. If you have symptoms of depression, please seek treatment. You can talk with a provider on Klarity in as little as 24 hours.

How depression is diagnosed in adults

There’s no one depression test online or in-person used to diagnose depression in adults. A medical or mental healthcare professional will assess your symptoms during a visit and ask:

  • What your symptoms are and when they started
  • How often you have symptoms
  • How much of an impact symptoms have on your daily life
  • What if any other mental or physical symptoms you have

Typically, if you feel sad or hopeless and/or have a loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy for most of the day every day for 2 weeks or more, you’ll get a depression diagnosis.

Even if you aren’t diagnosed with depression, you can still benefit from therapy.

Your provider’s recommended treatment may or may not include medication.

Common depression treatments

A combination of medications, counseling, and other interventions is typically recommended to treat anxiety.

Licensed medical professionals on Klarity work with you to create a plan for depression treatment online or in person — a plan tailored to you. As part of your plan, your provider may recommend:

  • Medications, like Zoloft, Prozac, Effexor, Luvox, or Celexa
  • Online or in-person depression counseling
  • Ketamine or brain stimulation therapy, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
  • Lifestyle changes

Psychotherapy alone works well for mild to moderate depression. More severe depression is often treated with medication and counseling. Find providers on Klarity for both.

Your provider’s recommended treatment may or may not include medication.

Depression medications

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

  • Increase the levels of serotonin — the “feel good chemical” — in the brain
  • Serotonin helps regulate mood, social behavior, appetite, sleep, and more
  • May have fewer side effects than other medications

Common  SSRI medications

  • Prozac (fluoxetine)
  • Zoloft (sertraline)
  • Celexa (citalopram)
  • Lexapro (escitalopram)
  • Paxil (paroxetine)

Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)

  • Increase the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain
  • Serotonin helps regulate mood, social behavior, appetite, sleep, and more
  • Norepinephrine increases alertness, focus, and memory retrieval

Common SNRI medications

  • Pristiq (desvenlafaxine)
  • Cymbalta (duloxetine)
  • Effexor (venlafaxine)
  • Savella (milnacipran)
  • Fetzima (levomilnacipran)

Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)

  • Primarily used for major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Increase the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain and reduce acetylcholine.

Common TCA medications

  • Anafranil (clomipramine)
  • Tofranil (imipramine)
  • Elavil (amitriptyline)
  • Norpramin (desipramine)
  • Pamelor (nortriptyline)
  • Silenor (doxepin)
  • Vivactil (protriptyline)

Depression counseling

Therapy and counseling help people with depression understand the causes of their symptoms and learn to manage the daily challenges of depression, including symptoms not fully resolved with medication.

Psychotherapy alone can work well for mild to moderate depression. The most common forms of therapy for depression include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) teaches you to challenge your negative or irrational thoughts and beliefs to change your behaviors and improve how you feel.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) helps you increase distress tolerance and improve emotional regulation.
  • Interpersonal therapy (IPT) focuses on identifying and learning to resolve interpersonal conflicts and build a reliable network of social support.
  • Psychodynamic therapy helps you acknowledge and understand unresolved trauma, often from childhood.
  • Talk therapy, aka psychotherapy, focuses on talking about your life, relationships, emotions, and struggles in a safe therapeutic space.
