About pravastatin

About pravastatin

What is pravastatin?
Pravastatin is an oral statin medication in the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor class. It works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol, which helps reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while modestly increasing HDL cholesterol.

It is available in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg tablets. The brand name is Pravachol, but generic versions are widely available.

Pravastatin is prescribed for:
• Reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in individuals with hypercholesterolemia and no history of coronary heart disease
• Lowering elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia
• Treating children (8+) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) to reduce LDL cholesterol

It is usually taken once daily, with or without food, as part of a larger cholesterol-management plan that includes diet and exercise.

How to get a pravastatin prescription online?

Getting evaluated for a pravastatin prescription through Klarity Health involves three simple steps:

  • Book a virtual visit: Schedule an appointment with a licensed provider through Klarity’s telehealth platform
  • Consultation: Discuss your health history, symptoms, and lab results with the provider
  • Prescription delivery: If prescribed, your medication will be sent to your preferred pharmacy for pickup or delivery

How does pravastatin compare to other medications?

When evaluating cholesterol-lowering medications, it’s essential to compare their efficacy, side effect profiles, and administration routes. Below is a comparison of pravastatin with other commonly prescribed statins:

MedicationLDL Reduction PotentialSide Effect RiskCost (Generic)Administration
PravastatinModerate (30–40%)Lower muscle toxicity risk~$14 for 45 tablets (40 mg)Oral, once daily
AtorvastatinHigh (up to 50–60%)Moderate (muscle pain, liver enzyme elevations)~$15 for 30 tablets (10 mg)Oral, once daily
RosuvastatinVery high (up to 55–63%)Moderate (increased risk in Asian populations)~$11 for 15 tablets (40 mg)Oral, once daily
SimvastatinModerate (30–50%)Higher risk of muscle-related side effects~$4 for 30 tablets (20 mg)Oral, preferably in the evening
LovastatinModerate (20–40%)Moderate (muscle pain, liver enzyme elevations)~$10 for 30 tablets (20 mg)Oral, with evening meal
FluvastatinLower (20–35%)Lower risk of drug interactions~$15 for 30 tablets (40 mg)Oral, once daily

Pravastatin is often preferred for patients needing a gentler statin with fewer drug interaction risks. Others may be more effective for patients requiring significant LDL reduction.
