About levetiracetam

What is levetiracetam?
Levetiracetam is a prescription antiepileptic drug (AED) used to treat seizures in adults (over 18 years of age), adolescents (12-17 years) and infants/children (from 1 month old). It’s approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  to manage a variety of seizure types, including:
- Partial-onset seizures (focal seizures), with or without secondary generalization
- Myoclonic seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures in idiopathic generalized epilepsy

It's also used off-label for other neurological symptoms, to prevent seizures prior to certain surgeries, and in traumatic brain injuries. Levetiracetam helps control seizures by stabilizing nerve activity in the brain, which might help people with epilepsy to live safer, more stable lives.

Levetiracetam is available under the brand name Keppra and in generic form. It is available as immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, oral solution, and IV injection. Depending on seizure type and severity, it can be used as monotherapy or as an add-on therapy.

Unlike some other AEDs, levetiracetam has minimal liver metabolism and very few drug interactions, making it a suitable choice for many patients.

What does levetiracetam cost?

Levetiracetam is available as a low-cost generic, with significant savings compared to the brand-name Keppra. Prices vary by pharmacy and formulation (IR vs XR), and most insurance plans cover it. Discounts from online platforms can reduce out-of-pocket expenses for those without insurance.

Pharmacy500 mg (60 tablets)750 mg (60 tablets)XR 1000 mg (30 tablets)
GoodRx (Generic)$10 – $25$15 – $30$25 – $50
Local Pharmacy$15 – $35$20 – $45$30 – $60
Mail-Order Pharmacy$10 – $22$14 – $28$20 – $45

Ways to save on levetiracetam:
– Request the generic version instead of Keppra
– Use discount cards like GoodRx, SingleCare, or WellRx
– Ask for a 90-day supply for better pricing
– Consider mail-order options for convenience and savings
The extended-release version tends to cost more than the immediate-release form. Discuss with your provider which formulation is best for your treatment and budget.

How to get a levetiracetam online prescription

Levetiracetam prescriptions can often be renewed or initiated through telehealth platforms, such as Klarity, particularly for patients with a documented seizure disorder. Klarity allows for remote evaluation, medication management, and follow-up care.

Steps to get levetiracetam online:

  1. Connect with a licensed medical provider on Klarity
  2. Attend a virtual consultation to confirm your diagnosis and discuss medication needs
  3. Receive a prescription, if appropriate, sent directly to your pharmacy
  4. Pick up locally or via delivery and schedule follow-up care
  5. Continue monitoring, as seizures and dosages may change over time

For new prescriptions, your provider may start at a lower dose and gradually increase to therapeutic levels. Bloodwork isn’t always required, but may be recommended in long-term treatment.

How does levetiracetam compare to other medications?

Levetiracetam is a widely used antiepileptic drug, especially favored for its minimal drug interactions, broad efficacy, and well-tolerated side effect profile. It’s often prescribed when patients can’t tolerate or don’t respond well to other AEDs.

Comparison to other AEDs:

  • Phenytoin (Dilantin): Older medication, effective, but has many drug interactions and long-term toxicity risks
  • Valproic acid (Depakote): Broad-spectrum, but with liver and weight gain concerns
  • Lamotrigine (Lamictal): Good for mood stabilization, but requires slow titration to avoid rash
  • Topiramate (Topamax): May cause cognitive slowing or kidney stones
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol): Effective for focal seizures, but requires liver enzyme monitoring

Advantages of levetiracetam:

  • Low potential for drug interactions
  • Routine Blood level monitoring is usually not required
  • Approved for multiple seizure types
  • Available in immediate- and extended-release options
  • Rapid onset with once- or twice-daily dosing

It may not be ideal for individuals with behavioral or psychiatric conditions, but it’s often the first or second-line treatment for generalized and focal epilepsy.
