About isotretinoin

About isotretinoin

What is isotretinoin?
Isotretinoin is a synthetic retinoid derived from vitamin A. It is available in capsule form under brand names like Claravis, Amnesteem and Absorica , as well as generic versions. Capsules typically come in 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, and 40 mg strengths. Although the exact dosage forms vary depending on the brand.

This medication is approved for individuals 12 and older for  severe nodular acne—defined by multiple inflamed lesions 5 mm or larger—that has not responded to other treatments.

Due to its serious side effect risks, isotretinoin is only prescribed through the FDA-mandated iPLEDGE program. Isotretinoin can cause serious and life-threatening birth defects.  This ensures that all patients, providers, and pharmacies are registered and follow strict safety protocols to prevent fetal exposure.

Treatment for severe nodular acne generally lasts 15–20 weeks or until nodules reduce by 70% or more but may vary based on body weight, response, and side effects.

How to get an isotretinoin prescription online?

Getting started with isotretinoin prescription online involves these steps:

  • Schedule an evaluation: Book a virtual visit with a licensed provider on a telehealth platform like Klarity Health.
  • Medical review: Your provider will assess your acne history, medications, lab results, and pregnancy risk (if applicable).
  • Enroll in iPLEDGE: Complete required steps, including birth control verification and monthly pregnancy testing.
  • Receive your prescription: If approved, your provider will send the prescription to a certified pharmacy.
  • Begin treatment: Start isotretinoin once all safety checks are completed.

How does isotretinoin compare to other medications?

When choosing an acne treatment, it’s important to compare effectiveness, side effects, and duration:

MedicationUse CaseSide Effect RiskDurationAdministration
IsotretinoinSevere nodular or cystic acne resistant to other treatments(teratogenicity, dry skin, mood effects)~15–20 weeksOral capsules
Oral antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline)Adjunct therapy in treatment moderate to severe acne(GD issues, sun sensitivity, avoid in pregnancy)Weeks–monthsOral tablets, capsule
Topical retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene)Acne(Irritation, skin dryness)VariesTopical
Hormonal agents (e.g., oral contraceptives, spironolactone)Moderate to severe, inflammatory Acne in womenHormonal effects or hyperkalemia (spironolactone)VariesOral

Oral isotretinoin is an acne treatment that addresses major acne causes—sebum, inflammation, bacteria, and keratinization—but it carries significantly higher risks than other acne medications.  Spironolactone can be used off-label for moderate to severe  acne vulgaris in women, although clinical evidence is limited to support its use.
