About Fosamax

What is Fosamax?
Fosamax (alendronate sodium) is a prescription medication classified as a bisphosphonate, primarily used to treat and prevent osteoporosis and manage Paget’s disease of bone. It works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, which enhances bone mineral density and reduces the risk of fractures.

Fosamax is available in various forms:
• Tablets:, 10 mg, 35 mg, and 70 mg (10 mg, 35 mg and 70 mg are available generic)
• Oral Solution: 70 mg per 75 mL bottle
• Fosamax Plus D: Combines 70 mg alendronate with 2800 IU or 5600 IU of vitamin D3

The usual dosing regimen involves taking a 70 mg tablet once a week or a 10 mg tablet once daily, depending on the condition being treated. Fosamax Plus D is specifically formulated to address both bone health and vitamin D deficiency, which is common in individuals with osteoporosis.

How to get a Fosamax prescription online?

Getting a Fosamax prescription online involves these steps:

  • Book a virtual visit: Schedule an appointment with a licensed provider through Klarity Health.
  • Medical review: The provider will assess your symptoms and review your health history.
  • Prescription fulfillment: If Fosamax is prescribed, your prescription will be sent to your preferred pharmacy for pickup or home delivery.

How does Fosamax compare to other medications?

Fosamax is a popular bisphosphonate used for treating osteoporosis, but there are other medications that may offer distinct advantages depending on your health needs.

MedicationAdministrationFrequencyBone Density ImprovementFracture Risk ReductionSide Effects
FosamaxOral (tablet, solution)Daily or weeklyModerate (in comparison to Prolia)Useful for spine and hip, fracturesGI issues, musculoskeletal pain
ProliaSubcutaneous injectionEvery 6 monthsHighReduced bone fracture risk overallBack pain, infections, low calcium, musculoskeletal pain

Fosamax and other bisphosphonates is often a first-line choice due to its proven efficacy and lower cost. However, for patients who cannot tolerate oral bisphosphonates, have failed other first line-agents or have specific needs, alternatives like Prolia may be considered. Prolia, in particular, has shown to have greater reduction in  fracture risk in comparison to alendronate.

This is not a complete list of side effects or warnings. Always Consult with your healthcare provider to find the best treatment option for your needs and address any concerns with your medication.
