About descovy

About descovy

What is descovy?
Descovy is a combination medication that includes two antiretroviral agents: emtricitabine (FTC) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). It’s approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral medications and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-1 prevention in certain populations..

Unlike earlier medications such as Truvada, which uses tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), Descovy contains tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a prodrug of tenofovir that delivers effective concentrations with lower systemic exposure. This reduces the risk of bone density loss and kidney toxicity. It's generally well-tolerated and preferred in patients with existing kidney or bone concerns. Descovy comes in oral tablets available in two strengths: 200 milligrams of emtricitabine / 25 milligrams of tenofovir alafenamide and 120 milligrams of emtricitabine / 15 milligrams of tenofovir alafenamide

Descovy is not a cure for HIV, but when taken as directed, it can reduce the viral load in people living with HIV to undetectable levels or prevent infection altogether when used for PrEP. It's important to take Descovy exactly as prescribed and undergo regular lab monitoring.

How to get a descovy prescription online?

Getting a prescription for Descovy online is now more convenient and secure than ever. You can consult with a licensed U.S. provider via a telehealth platform that specializes in PrEP or HIV treatment.

To get Descovy online:

  • Book a virtual visit with a board-certified provider through Klarity
  • Undergo necessary testing (e.g., HIV status, kidney function, hepatitis B screening).
  • Receive your prescription, if medically appropriate, sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy.
  • Set up lab follow-ups every 3 months (for PrEP) or as required for treatment monitoring.
  • Choose insurance or self-pay options depending on your provider and coverage.

This process ensures accessibility and confidentiality. Online platforms can expedite care and reduce wait times, making preventive care and HIV management more efficient.

How does descovy compare to other medications?

Descovy is a newer alternative to Truvada and is often preferred in certain patient populations due to its safety profile.

Here is how it compares to other HIV prevention/treatment medications:
• Truvada (FTC/TDF): Similar in function but uses an older form of tenofovir (TDF), which may increase kidney and bone side effect risks.
• Apretude (cabotegravir injection): Long-acting injectable PrEP administered every 2 months by a healthcare provider. Ideal for patients who struggle to remember to take their daily dose.
• Biktarvy: A combination of Descovy with bictegravir for HIV treatment—simplifies to a single-tablet regimen.
• Symtuza: A complete once-daily HIV treatment with a boosted protease inhibitor.

Descovy is well-suited for people needing a safer PrEP option or as part of a larger HIV treatment plan when paired with other ARVs. Your provider will help determine the most effective and personalized regimen for your needs.
