Colestipol prescription online

Colestipol is a bile acid sequestrant prescribed to lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) in people at risk of cardiovascular disease. It works by binding to bile acids in the intestines, preventing their reabsorption back into the bloodstream and prompting the liver to use more cholesterol to make new bile acids.

Looking to get a Colestipol prescription online? Talk to a licensed provider through Klarity in as little as 224 hours and, if medically appropriate, receive a prescription sent to your preferred pharmacy.

Providers on Klarity Health are independent practitioners with clinical autonomy; a diagnosis, treatment, or prescription is not guaranteed.

About colestipol

About colestipol

What is colestipol?
Colestipol is a cholesterol-lowering medication that belongs to a class called bile acid sequestrants. It's approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in individuals with primary hypercholesterolemia when diet and lifestyle changes alone are not enough. It may also be used off-label to manage chronic diarrhea caused by bile acid malabsorption and to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes.

In the United States, colestipol is available as a generic and under the brand name Colestid. It comes in two forms: oral tablets and granules for oral suspension. Tablets are available in 1 gram strength, and the granules are available in 5 gram packets or multi-dose containers.

Colestipol does not get absorbed into the bloodstream. Instead, it acts locally in the intestines to help reduce cholesterol by interrupting the recycling of bile acids. Because of its unique mechanism, it can be a good option for people who can't tolerate statins.

How to get a colestipol prescription online?

Getting colestipol online is easy with Klarity. If you’ve been struggling to manage your cholesterol levels or need an alternative to statins, a licensed provider can assess your medical history and goals.

Steps to get a prescription online:

  • Schedule a virtual consultation on Klarity
  • Meet with a licensed clinician to review your cholesterol history and treatment options
  • If appropriate, receive a prescription for colestipol (generic or Colestid)
  • Choose pickup at your local pharmacy or have it delivered
  • Schedule follow-ups for monitoring cholesterol levels and adjusting your treatment

If you are currently taking medications that may interact with colestipol, your healthcare provider may provide specific instructions on how to space your doses or suggest an alternative.

How does colestipol compare to other medications?

Several other medications are available to lower cholesterol, especially LDL cholesterol. Each works differently and has its own side effect profile.

MedicationHow it worksCommon side effects
AtorvastatinStatin; inhibits cholesterol productionMuscle pain, liver enzyme changes
EzetimibeBlocks cholesterol absorption in the gutFatigue, abdominal pain
ColesevelamBile acid sequestrant (like colestipol)Constipation, gas

Colestipol may be preferable for patients who cannot tolerate statins or need an add-on therapy. It’s less likely to cause muscle-related side effects but can increase triglycerides and cause constipation.
