What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It’s caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Many people don’t experience symptoms with chlamydia, which may contribute to how it can be easily spread unknowingly. Others may have mild or lead to severe complications. Chlamydia is treatable with a course of antibiotics, so catching it early is key.

Causes of chlamydia

Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It spreads through unprotected sexual contact. It can also be transmitted from parent to baby during childbirth. Because the bacterium lives in mucous membranes, it can affect your genitals, rectum, and throat.

Risk factors for chlamydia include having multiple sexual partners, inconsistent condom use, and previous STI infections. Chlamydia can be asymptomatic, so regular STI testing and safe sex practices are recommended.

What are the common symptoms of chlamydia?

Chlamydia often doesn’t have symptoms. But it can still cause serious health problems. When symptoms do occur, it may be weeks after contact with someone with chlamydia.

Common symptoms include:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Discharge from the penis
  • Pain and swelling in one or both testicles
  • Rectal pain
  • Bleeding from the rectum

Regular STI testing and safe sex practices are recommended to prevent the spread of chlamydia, which can lead to serious complications like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or infertility.

How to treat chlamydia

For most people, oral antibiotics will clear up a chlamydia infection. The first-line treatment includes prescribing doxycycline or azithromycin. Your provider will recommend avoiding sexual activity during treatment.

In some cases, the infection isn’t cleared with the initial round of antibiotics. When this happens, your provider may prescribe levofloxacin or erythromycin and request labs or follow-up testing to ensure the infection has been cleared.

If left untreated, chlamydia can cause PID or epididymitis or lead to other issues like chronic pain or infertility. In those cases, your provider may prescribe a longer course of antibiotics, intravenous antibiotics, or recommend hospitalization.

Common medications to treat chlamydia

There are no effective over-the-counter (OTC) medications for the treatment of chlamydia. It’s caused by a bacterium, so it requires an antibiotic. The most commonly used medications to treat it include:

If you need an alternative treatment option, your provider may prescribe amoxicillin, tetracycline, levofloxacin, or erythromycin.

Taking the full course of antibiotics, as prescribed by your provider, is important to fully clear the infection and prevent antibiotic resistance.

When to see a doctor for chlamydia treatment

Most people don’t experience symptoms with chlamydia. But, when they do occur, it’s typically one to three weeks after infection. If you experience painful urination, discharge, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, throat discomfort, testicular pain or swelling, bleeding rectum, or rectal pain, consult your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

What doctors can treat chlamydia?

Types of doctors that can diagnose and treat chlamydia include:

  • Primary care physicians
  • Gynecologists
  • Urologists
  • Infectious disease specialists

You can also visit sexual health clinics or organizations like Planned Parenthood, which offer STI testing and treatment.
