Aetna commercial plans in Florida may cover depression evaluation, talk therapy, and prescription treatment, including care delivered by telehealth. Coverage is not automatic. It depends on your specific plan, medical necessity review, the CVS/Caremark formulary for that product, and whether the visit is in network. How common is depression?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 21.0 million U.S. adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2021, or 8.3% of adults. Does Aetna typically cover depression treatment in Florida?

Many Aetna PPO, HMO, and EPO products sold in Florida include outpatient mental health visits and a pharmacy benefit that may list common antidepressants. “May cover” is the accurate phrase. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, visit limits, step therapy, and prior authorization can still apply. Aetna is not Florida Blue, Anthem, or Cigna. Each carrier uses a different medical policy library and a different PBM.

Aetna pharmacy benefits in this cluster typically run through CVS/Caremark. Express Scripts and Cigna Policy IP0477 (all stimulants require PA as of May 15, 2026) are Cigna facts. Do not mix them into an Aetna depression review. Stimulant PA also does not control SSRIs, SNRIs, bupropion, mirtazapine, or most other first-line depression medicines.

Florida law vs. what your card actually pays

Section 627.668 requires many group insurers to make optional coverage for mental and nervous disorders available. It is not a mandate that Aetna must pay for a named drug or a named number of therapy sessions. MHPAEA can still bar more restrictive quantitative and some non-quantitative limits for mental health compared with medical/surgical benefits on the same plan.
