          Symptoms of PTSD

PTSD symptoms can improve after a few weeks or months after the event, but they can also come back and go away sometimes over time.

          Common PTSD symptoms include:

          • Difficulty getting things done, concentrating, or paying attention
          • Negative emotions about yourself
          • Depression
          • Feelings of guilt
          • Violent or angry outbursts
          • Avoiding talking or thinking about the traumatic event
          • Avoiding people or things that remind you of the traumatic event
          • Feeling helpless or fearful
          • Avoiding feelings by becoming detached or numb
          • Feeling on edge, restless, or anxious
          • Difficulty sleeping or nightmares
          • Hallucinations
          • Flashbacks or vivid memories of the traumatic event
          • Images of the traumatic event suddenly come to mind

Find a provider on Klarity Health to discuss PTSD treatment and management. You and your provider can evaluate your health risks and talk through your PTSD treatment options.

          How is PTSD diagnosed?

To get a diagnosis for your PTSD, your healthcare provider will likely perform:

          • Physical exam. Your provider will probably perform a physical exam to rule out any medical issues that could be causing your symptoms.
          • Mental health evaluation. The evaluation involves discussing your symptoms and the traumatic event or situation that led up to your symptoms. You might also complete questionnaires that ask about your symptoms and experiences.

To get a PTSD diagnosis, you must have gone through a traumatic event or situation that involved either a possible or actual threat of serious injury, violence, or death. This means you:

          • Experienced a traumatic event or situation directly
          • Witnessed a traumatic event or situation happening to others in person
          • Learned that a family member, friend, or someone else close to you experienced a traumatic event
          • Were exposed to the graphic details of traumatic events or situations repeatedly. This is a common reason for PTSD in first responders.

You might have PTSD if you experience symptoms of PTSD that last for more than a month after the traumatic event or situation and impact your relationships and ability to function in work and social settings.

Getting all of this information can help your healthcare provider recommend the appropriate medication or treatment for you.

          PTSD treatment options

Your treatment depends on your PTSD diagnosis and the severity of your PTSD. Providers on Klarity Health may recommend:

          • Psychotherapy. Your provider might recommend multiple kinds of talk therapy to treat your PTSD. The kinds of psychotherapy used to treat PTSD include:
            • Exposure therapy. This kind of behavioral therapy helps you face memories and situations that you’re afraid of, so you can learn to cope with these situations and memories and live a more functional life. You gradually face these memories and situations over time in a predictable and controlled way. This kind of therapy works well for nightmares and flashbacks.
            • Cognitive therapy. This kind of talk therapy helps you recognize the cognitive patterns or ways of thinking that are keeping you stuck. Examples of cognitive patterns include negative beliefs about the risk of a traumatic situation or event reoccurring.
          • PTSD medications. Multiple kinds of medications help improve symptoms of PTSD, including:
            • Antidepressants. These medications can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and help improve sleep and concentration. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medications Paxil (paroxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) to treat PTSD. Providers may also prescribe Effexor XR (venlafaxine).
            • Anti-anxiety medications. Anti-anxiety medications can limit severe anxiety and related issues.
            • Stellate ganglion block. Recent research on PTSD medications shows that this procedure can help treat PTSD. During the procedure, medication is injected into a group of nerves on the side of your neck.
            • Prazosin. Minipress (prazosin) is typically used to treat high blood pressure, but recent research shows it could limit nightmares in people with PTSD.

Your provider can discuss and personalize all treatments for you after diagnosis.

          Common PTSD medications
