Learn about psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term autoimmune condition that affects the skin. It speeds up the life cycle of skin cells and causes them to build up quickly, leading to thick, raised, scaly patches (called plaques) that can be red, itchy, and inflamed. Some individuals may only have small patches, while others can have widespread plaques. Though it’s not contagious, psoriasis can significantly impact a person’s physical comfort and self-esteem.

Causes of psoriasis

Psoriasis happens when the immune system speeds up the production and turnover of skin cells. Because the skin is growing faster than normal, thicker, scaly patches of skin form on the surface. While we don’t know exactly what causes the immune system to mistakenly attack healthy skin cells, scientists think both genetics and environmental factors play a role.

Your risk is significantly higher if you have a family history of psoriasis. Common triggers include stress, skin injuries, certain infections (like strep throat), medications such as lithium or beta-blockers, smoking, and excessive alcohol use. Hormonal changes and cold, dry weather can also contribute to flare-ups. Because it’s an autoimmune disorder, psoriasis may also be linked with other systemic conditions, like arthritis or metabolic syndrome.

Symptoms of psoriasis

Psoriasis symptoms can vary widely depending on the type and severity of the condition. In mild cases, small areas of skin may develop light scaling or dry patches that itch and can vary in color, from red to purple.

Common symptoms of psoriasis

  • Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery-white scales
  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed or itch
Itching, burning, or soreness in affected areas
  • Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails (nail psoriasis)
  • Stiff and swollen joints (linked to psoriatic arthritis)
  • Flaky plaques that can appear on the scalp
  • Cycles of flare-ups and remission (symptoms come and go)

Most common types of psoriasis

  • Plaque psoriasis (Psoriasis vulgaris): Most common; raised, inflamed, scaly patches
  • Guttate psoriasis: Small, drop-shaped sores, often triggered by infections
  • Inverse psoriasis: Smooth, red patches in body folds (e.g., under arms, groin)
  • Pustular psoriasis: White pustules (blisters of non-infectious pus) surrounded by red skin
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis: Rare and severe; widespread redness, shedding, and intense pain/itching
  • Nail psoriasis: Affects fingernails and toenails with pitting, discoloration, or separation
  • Psoriatic arthritis: Causes joint pain and swelling, can develop with or without skin symptoms.

Psoriasis treatment options

Treatment for psoriasis depends on the severity, location, and type of psoriasis. For mild cases, over-the-counter moisturizers and topical corticosteroids can often keep symptoms under control.

Moderate to severe cases may require prescription-strength topicals, phototherapy (light therapy), or systemic treatments, including oral medications and biologic injections. Sometimes your provider may suggest combining therapies to make them more effective and decrease side effects.
