Does Humana Cover ADHD Treatment in California? A 2026 Guide

Humana coverage for ADHD care in California in 2026 is usually a Medicare Advantage question, not a commercial PPO question. Humana exited most commercial group medical markets. Benefits typically follow CMS rules, the Humana Pharmacy Solutions (HPS) Part D formulary, and prior authorization. California SB 855 does not rewrite Medicare Advantage. Always verify your own Evidence of Coverage before you book.

TLDR

  • Humana in California is typically Medicare Advantage (MA) only. Do not assume an employer PPO still uses Humana medical benefits.
  • Federal MHPAEA and California SB 855 / Health & Safety Code § 1374.72 apply to many fully insured commercial and DMHC-regulated products. They generally do not control Medicare Advantage. MA follows 42 CFR Part 422.
  • Pharmacy benefits on many Humana MA plans run through Humana Pharmacy Solutions (HPS). Stimulant ADHD medications often need prior authorization through Humana Clinical Pharmacy Review (HCPR). This is not Cigna PA Policy IP0477.
  • HHS/DEA telemedicine flexibilities for prescribing many controlled medications currently run through December 31, 2026. Most ADHD stimulants are Schedule II.
  • Medi-Cal and dual-eligible products follow California Medicaid rules, not your MA Evidence of Coverage. This page does not describe Medi-Cal coverage.
  • Verify drugs on Humana’s Medicare drug list and PA tools. For MA appeals after plan reconsideration, CMS Independent Review Entity (Maximus) is often 1-855-887-6668. CDI (1-800-927-4357) and DMHC generally do not govern MA.

Does Humana cover ADHD treatment in California?

Often, some of it, with caveats, if you have a Humana Medicare Advantage plan that includes Part B medical visits and Part D drugs. Evaluation, follow-up, and medication management may process when the visit is medically necessary, the clinician is in network (or you use plan-allowed telehealth), and any stimulant clears HPS prior authorization. Copays, deductibles, and whether Klarity is in network still sit in your Evidence of Coverage and provider directory.

If you only have a leftover Humana commercial card from a prior employer year, confirm the carrier. Many California workers now have Anthem, Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, or UnitedHealthcare for medical benefits. Related guides: Anthem CA ADHD, Cigna CA ADHD, Aetna CA ADHD, and Blue Shield CA ADHD.

Why SB 855 does not decide Humana MA ADHD coverage

Two layers matter in 2026 for commercial mental health. They usually do not write your Humana MA file:

  1. Federal MHPAEA. Group health plans and many individual commercial plans that cover mental health generally cannot apply more restrictive limits than they apply to medical/surgical care in the same classification.
  2. California SB 855 and Health & Safety Code § 1374.72, plus related Insurance Code rules, set parity and medical-necessity standards on many fully insured commercial and DMHC Knox-Keene products.

Medicare Advantage is a federal product. CMS 42 CFR Part 422, the plan’s Evidence of Coverage, and National/Local Coverage rules govern MA, not SB 855. If Humana denies a stimulant as not meeting Part D criteria, that is usually a formulary or PA issue, not a CDI SB 855 complaint. Keep those buckets separate when you appeal.

Telehealth ADHD visits and controlled-substance rules

California Insurance Code § 10123.85 addresses telehealth on many fully insured commercial plans. That statute does not bind Medicare Advantage the same way. Humana MA plans still often cover video visits when the plan treats the service as covered in person and the clinician meets CMS and plan telehealth rules.

Klarity providers licensed in California can evaluate ADHD by video when clinically appropriate. Same-day appointments are often available. Coverage still depends on network status and cost share.

Federal controlled-substance telemedicine rules remain a separate overlay. HHS and DEA have extended certain telemedicine flexibilities through December 31, 2026. Most first-line ADHD stimulants (methylphenidate, amphetamine salts, lisdexamfetamine) are Schedule II. Non-stimulants such as atomoxetine are typically not scheduled. Your clinician still must follow DEA, California prescriber, and plan rules. See DEA guidance and your plan’s pharmacy PA page at Humana prior authorization.

HPS formulary, HCPR, and stimulant prior authorization

Humana Medicare drug lists live at humana.com/pharmacy/medicare-drug-list. Providers use HPS tools and HCPR for many high-risk or high-cost drugs. Stimulants commonly need diagnosis documentation, age, dose, and sometimes step therapy. Quantity limits are common.

Do not mix this with Cigna Express Scripts Policy IP0477 (stimulant PA on many Cigna commercial lists) or with CVS/Caremark’s 2025-2026 Zepbound timeline. Those are other PBMs. Check the drug list printed for your specific Humana MA contract year.

What a typical ADHD visit may include

An online ADHD evaluation usually includes history, screening tools, differential diagnosis (anxiety, sleep, thyroid, trauma), and a treatment plan. Medication is not automatic. If a stimulant is appropriate, the prescriber may start a PA with Humana. Follow-up is part of safe care, not an upsell.

Klarity is a telehealth marketplace. Licensed clinicians in the network of 2,000+ providers make clinical decisions. Klarity does not guarantee that Humana will pay a claim.

Appeals, CDI, DMHC, and CMS

For Humana Medicare Advantage:

  • Start with the plan’s organization determination / coverage decision and reconsideration process in your Evidence of Coverage.
  • After plan reconsideration, many Part C and Part D disputes go to the CMS Independent Review Entity (often Maximus Federal Services, 1-855-887-6668).
  • California Department of Insurance (CDI) consumer line 1-800-927-4357 and DMHC Help Center generally handle fully insured commercial and Knox-Keene products, not MA.

Medi-Cal members should use Medi-Cal managed-care grievance paths, not this MA checklist.
