If you hold an Aetna commercial card in Texas and you need ADHD care, many employer and individual plans may cover a diagnostic evaluation, follow-up visits, and some stimulant or non-stimulant medicines. Coverage is not automatic. Your Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC), prior authorization rules, and CVS/Caremark formulary decide what you pay.

TLDR

  • Aetna commercial plans in Texas typically process ADHD visits under federal MHPAEA plus Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1355.
  • Video visits often follow Chapter 1455 telehealth rules when the service is otherwise a covered benefit.
  • Pharmacy for many Aetna Texas commercial members runs through CVS/Caremark, not Carelon Rx and not Express Scripts.
  • CVS/Caremark removed Zepbound from many lists on July 1, 2025 and reinstated it October 1, 2026. That timeline is an obesity formulary event. It does not rewrite ADHD stimulant coverage.
  • Cigna PA Policy IP0477 (all stimulants require PA) is a Cigna/ESI rule. Do not treat it as Aetna policy. Aetna still commonly requires PA for Schedule II ADHD medicines. Check your Caremark list.
  • Amphetamine and methylphenidate products are Schedule II. HHS/DEA telemedicine flexibilities for controlled medications run through December 31, 2026.
  • Medicare Advantage, Medicaid STAR, and CHIP follow different rules. The CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge ($50/month Wegovy, Zepbound, Foundayo starting July 1, 2026) is a Medicare obesity program, not an Aetna commercial ADHD benefit.
  • Texas Department of Insurance Consumer Protection Help Line: 800-252-3439. Medicare appeals may reach Maximus IRE at 1-855-887-6668.
  • Coverage varies by plan. Verify benefits before you book. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

Does Aetna cover ADHD treatment in Texas?

Many Aetna commercial members in Texas may receive coverage for a medically necessary ADHD evaluation, therapy when listed as a behavioral health benefit, and some prescription ADHD medicines. That is a typical design, not a guarantee. Groups still impose step therapy, quantity limits, or non-formulary status on brand stimulants.

Klarity Health works with 2,000+ licensed providers. A licensed clinician can take history, discuss options, and, when medically appropriate, prescribe. Klarity does not promise that Aetna will pay a specific claim.

Aetna versus other Texas Blues and Anthem

Aetna is not Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (HCSC) and not Anthem (Elevance). Mixing payer IDs is a common reason claims deny. Confirm the legal name on your SBC and the member services number on the card.

Parity: MHPAEA and Chapter 1355

Federal MHPAEA generally requires that financial requirements and treatment limitations for mental health and substance use disorder benefits be no more restrictive than those for medical/surgical benefits in the same classification. Texas adds Insurance Code Chapter 1355. TDI’s overview is here: Insurance coverage and parity for mental health and substance use.

ADHD evaluation and medication management typically sit in the mental health outpatient and pharmacy classifications. Parity does not force every brand stimulant onto the preferred tier. It also does not erase prior authorization when the plan applies comparable medical-management tools to medical drugs.

Telehealth: Chapter 1455

Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1455 addresses coverage for telemedicine and telehealth when a health benefit plan covers the same service in person. A covered ADHD visit delivered by video may therefore be payable at the in-person rate, subject to the same cost sharing, if the clinician and platform meet the statute and your contract. Self-funded ERISA plans may follow federal rules instead of Chapter 1455. Confirm with the plan administrator.

CVS/Caremark and ADHD medications

Many Aetna commercial formularies in Texas use CVS/Caremark. That PBM is not Carelon Rx and not Express Scripts. Do not apply Cigna PA Policy IP0477 as if it were Aetna language. Do not apply Caremark’s Zepbound removal (July 1, 2025) and reinstatement (October 1, 2026) to ADHD claims. Those dates are obesity-list events.

Common options a clinician may discuss include methylphenidate, mixed amphetamine salts, lisdexamfetamine, atomoxetine, guanfacine, and clonidine. Most first-line stimulants are Schedule II. Non-stimulants are often unscheduled. Your Caremark list still decides tier, quantity limits, and whether a brand needs a medical exception.

Federal HHS/DEA telemedicine flexibilities for prescribing controlled medications currently run through December 31, 2026. Plans and pharmacies can still require identity checks, PDMP review, and in-network pharmacies.

Medicare Advantage, Medicaid STAR, and CHIP

This guide is written for Aetna commercial (employer and ACA individual) members. Aetna Medicare Advantage follows CMS 42 CFR Part 422. Texas Medicaid STAR and CHIP follow HHSC contracts. Dual-eligible members should not assume commercial ADHD copays apply.

The CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge ($50/month Wegovy, Zepbound, Foundayo as of July 1, 2026) is an obesity program. It is not an ADHD stimulant benefit and it is not a Caremark commercial ADHD exception.

How to check your Aetna Texas ADHD benefits

  1. Open your SBC and look for outpatient mental health and retail pharmacy cost sharing.
  2. Call the number on the back of the card and ask whether ADHD evaluation, medication management, and your target drug require prior authorization.
  3. Log into CVS/Caremark (or the PBM named on the card) and search the drug by NDC or brand/generic name.
  4. Ask whether video visits count as in-network under Chapter 1455 for your specific group.
  5. If a commercial claim still stalls after internal appeal, TDI’s Consumer Protection Help Line is 800-252-3439 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central, Monday–Friday). See TDI contact and complaint help.
  6. Medicare Advantage denials may proceed to a CMS Independent Review Entity (Maximus IRE, 1-855-887-6668) after plan reconsideration.

FAQ

Will Aetna pay for Adderall in Texas?

It may, when the drug is on your Caremark list and PA criteria are met. Brand versus generic, quantity limits, and age rules still apply. Coverage varies by plan.

Does mental health parity force Aetna to cover every ADHD drug?

No. Chapter 1355 and MHPAEA constrain how Aetna designs mental health limits relative to medical benefits. They do not require every NDC on the preferred tier.

Can I get ADHD care by video?

Many commercial plans may pay a covered ADHD visit by video under Chapter 1455. Controlled-substance prescribing still follows DEA and plan rules through December 31, 2026 under current federal flexibilities.

Is IP0477 an Aetna rule?

No. IP0477 is associated with Cigna/Express Scripts stimulant PA. Aetna uses Caremark criteria. Ask Aetna for the actual PA form name on your group.
