Anthem-branded commercial plans that cover Texas residents may cover ADHD evaluation, follow-up, and some stimulant or non-stimulant medications. Coverage typically depends on the medical policy, Carelon Rx (or other) formulary, prior authorization, and whether the visit is in network. Always verify your own benefits before you book.

See if you may qualify for online ADHD care through Klarity’s network of 2,000+ licensed providers. You can also browse conditions we treat or read about ADHD.

TLDR

  • Anthem may cover medically necessary ADHD visits and some ADHD medications for Texas members. Benefits vary by employer PPO/HMO, Exchange, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid products.
  • Federal MHPAEA plus Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1355 apply to many fully insured commercial policies written in Texas. They do not guarantee a specific stimulant or a specific telehealth group.
  • Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1455 addresses telemedicine and telehealth coverage on many fully insured plans. Self-funded ERISA employer plans follow the plan document more than Chapter 1455.
  • Many Anthem commercial pharmacy benefits run through Carelon Rx. Check your ID card and the Carelon Rx drug list or Anthem formulary search. Stimulants often need prior authorization. This is not Cigna PA Policy IP0477.
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX / HCSC) is a different company from Anthem. A “Blue” card issued in Texas is often BCBSTX, not Anthem. Confirm the logo and payer ID before you assume Carelon Rx rules apply.
  • CVS/Caremark dropped Zepbound on many lists on July 1, 2025 and later reinstated it on October 1, 2026. That timeline belongs to Caremark (common on Aetna), not to typical Anthem/Carelon ADHD coverage.
  • Most ADHD stimulants are Schedule II. HHS and DEA extended certain telemedicine flexibilities for prescribing many controlled medications through December 31, 2026. See the Federal Register extension and DEA announcement.
  • Medicare Advantage and Medicaid (STAR) follow CMS and Texas Medicaid rules, not Chapter 1355 in the same way. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (~$50/month for certain Wegovy, Zepbound KwikPen, and Foundayo products) is a CMS obesity program, not an ADHD benefit. See CMS GLP-1 Bridge.
  • Verify benefits with Anthem and Carelon Rx. For fully insured Texas coverage disputes, TDI’s Help Line is 800-252-3439. See TDI complaint help. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

Does Anthem cover ADHD treatment in Texas?

Often, some of it, with caveats. Evaluation visits and medication management may process as medical or behavioral-health benefits on many Anthem commercial plans when the visit is medically necessary and in network. Medication coverage is a separate pharmacy question. Copays, deductibles, quantity limits, and whether Klarity (or any telehealth group) is in network still sit in your Summary of Benefits and Coverage, medical policy, and PDL.

Self-funded ERISA employer plans follow federal rules and the plan document more than Texas Insurance Code. Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and dual-eligible products follow CMS and Texas Medicaid rules. Always treat this page as education, not a coverage determination.

Check if your plan may cover an ADHD visit.

Anthem versus Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas

Texas members often mix up two Blues:

  1. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Elevance Health). National and multi-state employer products, some individual/Exchange products in other states, and some Texas residents on a parent’s or employer’s Anthem plan.
  2. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX), part of Health Care Service Corporation. This is the dominant local Blue in Texas. Prior authorization pages live at bcbstx.com.

If your card says BCBSTX, this Anthem guide does not control your PBM. If your card says Anthem and lists Carelon Rx, use Anthem’s tools. Klarity also publishes UnitedHealthcare Texas ADHD coverage at UHC TX ADHD.

Parity: MHPAEA and Chapter 1355

Two layers matter in 2026:

  1. Federal MHPAEA. Group health plans and many individual plans that cover mental health or substance use disorder care generally cannot apply more restrictive financial requirements or treatment limitations than they apply to medical/surgical care in the same classification.
  2. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1355, including rules on serious mental illness and related mental-health coverage for many fully insured plans. TDI discusses Chapter 1355 data collection at tdi.texas.gov. Implementing rules include 28 TAC § 21.2401.

Parity can support an appeal when Anthem applies tighter visit limits, copays, or prior auth to ADHD care than to comparable medical care. Parity does not force Anthem to cover a specific brand stimulant, waive every PA, or put every telehealth company in network.

Telehealth ADHD visits in Texas

Chapter 1455 generally requires many fully insured plans to cover telemedicine and telehealth services that would be covered in person, when clinically appropriate. Employer self-funded plans may still reimburse video visits, but the statute may not bind them.

Klarity providers licensed in Texas can evaluate ADHD by video when clinically appropriate. Same-day appointments are often available. Coverage still depends on network status and cost share.

Federal controlled-substance telemedicine rules remain a separate overlay. HHS and DEA extended certain flexibilities through December 31, 2026. See HHS. Plan and pharmacy rules still apply to Schedule II stimulants.

Carelon Rx, stimulants, and prior authorization

Many Anthem commercial members use Carelon Rx. Stimulants such as Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta, and related generics often sit on the PDL with prior authorization, age limits, or quantity limits. Non-stimulants (atomoxetine, guanfacine ER, viloxazine) may have different rules.

Do not confuse this with:

  • Cigna PA Policy IP0477 (Express Scripts), which addresses stimulant PA on many Cigna plans.
  • OptumRx on UnitedHealthcare.
  • CVS/Caremark on many Aetna plans, including the Zepbound 2025/2026 obesity-formulary timeline, which is irrelevant to ADHD stimulants on Carelon Rx.

Ask Anthem which PBM is on your card. Then search that PDL for the exact NDC your clinician may prescribe.

Medicare, Medicaid, and the GLP-1 Bridge (not ADHD)

If your Anthem product is Medicare Advantage, CMS 42 CFR Part 422 and the plan’s Part D formulary govern. Texas Medicaid / STAR products follow HHSC rules. Chapter 1355 does not rewrite those federal or Medicaid contracts.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (about $50 per month for certain Wegovy, Zepbound KwikPen, and Foundayo products from July 1, 2026) is an obesity program. It does not pay for Adderall or other ADHD stimulants. Do not mix that CMS pathway into an ADHD prior-auth appeal.

Medicaid and dual-eligible members should verify Texas Medicaid, not this commercial Anthem summary.

How to verify and appeal

  1. Log in to anthem.com (or the app on your card) and confirm medical vs pharmacy benefits, deductibles, and telehealth cost share.
  2. Search the Carelon Rx or Anthem PDL for the ADHD medication under discussion.
  3. Ask whether Klarity or your specific clinician is in network for Texas behavioral health.
  4. If denied, use Anthem’s internal appeal. For fully insured Texas policies, TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central, Monday–Friday). TDI main line: 800-578-4677. See TDI contact.
  5. Medicare Advantage pharmacy disputes may go through CMS redetermination and, later, Maximus IRE at 1-855-887-6668. TDI does not control MAPD.

FAQ

Will Anthem pay for an online ADHD evaluation in Texas?

It may, when the visit is medically necessary, billed correctly, and in network (or covered out of network under your plan). Chapter 1455 helps many fully insured members. Confirm telehealth cost share before you book.

Does parity mean Anthem must cover Adderall?

No. Parity compares how Anthem treats mental-health benefits versus medical benefits. It does not create a brand-name stimulant mandate.

Is Cigna IP0477 my Anthem PA rule?

No. IP0477 is a Cigna/ESI stimulant policy. Anthem typically uses Carelon Rx criteria.

What if my card says Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas?

You likely have BCBSTX (HCSC), not Anthem. Use BCBSTX tools and prior-auth lists instead of this page.
