Does Aetna Cover ADHD Treatment in New York? A 2026 Guide

If you have Aetna in New York and you are looking for ADHD care, the short answer is that many commercial plans may cover evaluation, therapy, and medication management, including telehealth. Coverage is not automatic. It depends on your specific plan, network, pharmacy benefit, and whether stimulants need prior authorization through CVS/Caremark.

This 2026 guide explains federal MHPAEA rules, New York Insurance Law §§ 3221 and 4303 (often called Timothy’s Law), telehealth statutes §§ 3217-h and 4306-g, Caremark pharmacy steps, and how to verify benefits before you book. It does not promise that Aetna will pay for any visit or prescription.

TLDR

  • Aetna may cover ADHD evaluation and treatment in New York when the service is medically necessary and in network. Always verify your own benefits.
  • Federal MHPAEA and New York Insurance Law §§ 3221 and 4303 generally require mental health coverage comparable to medical/surgical benefits on many state-regulated plans.
  • Telehealth coverage for many NY-regulated plans is addressed in Insurance Law §§ 3217-h and 4306-g. See the DFS telehealth FAQ.
  • Pharmacy benefits often run through CVS/Caremark. Stimulants commonly need prior authorization. Check the Aetna formulary tool.
  • HHS and DEA extended certain telemedicine flexibilities for controlled medications through December 31, 2026. Plan and DEA rules still apply.
  • Klarity connects patients with 2,000+ licensed clinicians. Coverage still varies by plan.
  • Crisis: call or text 988. Emergency: 911.

Does Aetna cover ADHD treatment in New York?

Often, yes, on many employer and individual plans that include mental health benefits. “Cover” in this article means a claim may be paid when you meet plan rules: diagnosis, medical necessity, in-network provider, copay/coinsurance, and any prior authorization.

Self-funded ERISA employer plans follow federal rules more than New York Insurance Law. Medicaid, Essential Plan, and Medicare Advantage products use different formularies and networks. Read your Evidence of Coverage or call the number on your card.

Mental health parity in New York

Two layers matter:

  1. Federal MHPAEA. If a plan covers mental health, financial requirements and treatment limits generally cannot be more restrictive than those for medical/surgical care. See the U.S. Department of Labor MHPAEA page.
  2. New York Insurance Law §§ 3221 and 4303 (Timothy’s Law and related mandates). DFS discusses these alongside MHPAEA in Circular Letter No. 7 (2014).

Parity does not mean every ADHD medication is on formulary with a $0 copay. It means mental health benefits should not be designed more restrictively than comparable medical benefits. If a denial looks like a parity problem, you can appeal and, for many state-regulated plans, contact DFS at (800) 342-3736.

Telehealth ADHD visits

New York Insurance Law §§ 3217-h and 4306-g address telehealth delivery for many commercial policies. DFS summarizes insurer and provider questions in its telehealth FAQ.

For stimulant prescribing, federal controlled-substance rules still apply. HHS and DEA extended certain COVID-era telemedicine flexibilities through December 31, 2026. A New York–licensed, DEA-registered clinician still has to follow identity, documentation, and pharmacy rules. Klarity does not guarantee that any specific stimulant will be prescribed or covered.

CVS/Caremark, stimulants, and prior authorization

Most Aetna commercial pharmacy benefits use CVS/Caremark. Coverage for Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta, generic methylphenidate, atomoxetine, or guanfacine typically depends on:

Non-stimulant options may have different PA rules than Schedule II stimulants. Ask the pharmacy which PA code applies before you assume a denial is final.

What an ADHD evaluation typically includes

Licensed clinicians on Klarity may complete a history, symptom scales, differential diagnosis (anxiety, sleep, thyroid, substance use), and a treatment plan. Medication is one option. Therapy, school or work accommodations, and sleep hygiene often sit alongside it.

Same-day visits are available with many of the 2,000+ clinicians on the platform, subject to state licensure and schedule. A visit is not a guarantee of a controlled-substance prescription.

How to verify Aetna benefits before you book

  1. Call the member number on your card. Ask whether outpatient psychiatry and telehealth ADHD evaluation are in network.
  2. Ask for CPT codes commonly used for psychiatric diagnostic evaluation and follow-up med management, plus your copay vs coinsurance.
  3. Confirm the pharmacy PBM is Caremark and search your drug on the Aetna formulary tool.
  4. If PA is required, ask the clinic to submit it before the first fill.
  5. Get the reference number for the call.

Appeals and DFS

If Aetna denies a visit or medication:

  1. Use the internal appeal in your denial letter.
  2. Ask for the medical-necessity criteria used.
  3. For many New York–regulated policies, file with the Department of Financial Services: dfs.ny.gov/complaint or (800) 342-3736.

Self-funded employer plans often appeal through the plan administrator and federal DOL processes instead of DFS.
