About benztropine

About benztropine

What is benztropine?
Benztropine mesylate is a prescription medication classified as an anticholinergic agent and antihistamine agent. It works by blocking acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in muscle movement, helping to restore the balance between dopamine and acetylcholine in the brain. This makes it useful for conditions that cause involuntary movements, muscle stiffness, and tremors.

Benztropine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an adjunctive therapy for various forms of parkinsonism, including idiopathic and postencephalitic parkinsonism and for acute treatment of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) (drug-induced movement disorders) excluding tardive dyskinesia. It’s only available in generic form in the U.S., as the brand name Cogentin (intravenous solution) has been discontinued.

Benztropine is available as an oral tablet in 0.5, 1, and 2 milligram strengths or as an injectable solution in a 1 milligram/milliliter strength.

How to get a benztropine prescription online?

Getting benztropine through Klarity is quick and simple:

  1. Schedule a telehealth visit: Share your medical history and symptoms, especially related to Parkinsonism or medication-induced movement issues.
  2. Review your treatment needs: Your provider may ask about your current medications, neurological symptoms, or history of antipsychotic use.
  3. Receive your prescription: If clinically appropriate, a prescription for benztropine will be sent to your pharmacy electronically.
  4. Pick up or get delivery: Choose local pharmacy pickup or mail-order delivery.

How does benztropine compare to other medications?

MedicationDrug classCommon usesKey differences
BenztropineAnticholinergicParkinsonism, EPSDual use for Parkinson’s and drug-induced symptoms
TrihexyphenidylAnticholinergicParkinsonismSimilar use; more commonly used in Parkinson’s
Carbidopa/LevodopaDopamine precursorParkinson’sMain treatment for Parkinson’s; directly replaces dopamine, available in ODT formulation.
AmantadineAntiviral/DopaminergicParkinson’s, dyskinesiaLess anticholinergic burden; helps with tremor as monotherapy
PropranololBeta-blockerAkathisiaUsed specifically for restlessness and anxiety-type EPS symptoms (e.g., “stage fright”)

Unlike newer Parkinson’s treatments that increase dopamine levels (like levodopa), benztropine works by restoring the balance between dopamine and acetylcholine in the brain. It may be preferred in younger patients or those with predominant tremor who can’t tolerate dopaminergic meds or need an add-on to control side effects of psychiatric drugs. Benztropine isn’t usually recommended for older adults, as it can increase the risk of confusion, memory issues, constipation, and urinary retention. It may also worsen conditions like glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or severe dry mouth. It’s generally avoided in people with a history of cognitive impairment or those sensitive to anticholinergic effects.
