Commonly prescribed obesity medications

You should use prescribed obesity or weight loss medications along with exercise, diet, and other lifestyle changes. Before prescribing a medication, your healthcare provider will consider your medical history and potential medication side effects. Providers on Klarity Health only prescribe what’s appropriate based on your diagnosis.

The most common weight loss medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat obesity include:

Medication typeGlucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medicationsOral medications

Symptoms of obesity

Obesity can cause many day-to-day issues and symptoms, including:

  • Back pain
  • Fatigue
  • Excess body fat, particularly around the waist
  • Joint pain
  • Insomnia
  • Inability to perform physical tasks
  • Heavy sweating
  • Breathlessness
  • Snoring

If you have any concerns about your weight or any related health issues, find a provider on Klarity Health to discuss obesity treatment and management. You and your provider can evaluate your health risks and talk through your obesity treatment options.

How is obesity diagnosed?

Your licensed healthcare provider can perform a physical exam and recommend a few tests to diagnose obesity. These tests and exams include:

  • Review your medical history. Your healthcare provider can review your medical history, as well as the history of your weight, weight loss efforts, exercise habits, and physical activity.
  • Physical exam. A physical exam can include examining your abdomen, listening to your lungs and heart, measuring your height, and checking your vital signs, including your temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate.
  • Measure body mass index (BMI) and waist size. You’re considered obese when you have a BMI of at least 30. BMI numbers higher than 30 boost your risk of heart conditions, diabetes, and other health issues even more. Also called abdominal fat or visceral fat, the fat stored around your waist can potentially boost your risk of diabetes and heart disease. If you’re a woman with a waist size of over 35 inches or a man with a waist size of over 40 inches, you may have more health risks than those with smaller waist sizes.
  • Check for other health conditions. Your healthcare provider can check for other potential health conditions, including diabetes, liver issues, an underactive thyroid, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Getting all of this information can help your healthcare provider recommend the appropriate medication or treatment for you.

Obesity treatment options

The primary goal of obesity treatment is reaching and maintaining a healthy weight to improve your overall health and reduce the risk of developing an obesity-related health condition. Providers on Klarity Health may recommend:

  • Dietary changes. Choose a diet with healthy foods that works for you. The most common dietary changes for the treatment of obesity include meal replacements, restricting certain foods, eating more plant-based foods, emphasizing lean sources of protein, and reducing the number of calories you consume.
  • Exercise and physical activity. Those with obesity need at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Keep moving throughout the day as well. Some people aim for 10,000 steps per day.
  • Behavioral changes. Behavioral changes typically include looking at your current daily habits to figure out which situations, stressors, and other factors have contributed to your obesity.
  • Weight loss medications. The most common medications used to treat obesity include Ozempic (semaglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide), Qsymia (phentermine-topiramate), Xenical (orlistat), and Contrave (bupropion-naltrexone). Other medications include Rybelsus (semaglutide), Alli (orlistat), and Saxenda (liraglutide).
  • Endoscopic weight loss procedures. Endoscopic procedures don’t require any incisions in your skin. Common endoscopic procedures for weight loss include:
    • Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a procedure where stitches are placed in your stomach to decrease the amount of liquid and food your stomach can hold.
    • An intragastric balloon for weight loss procedure involves placing a small balloon in your stomach, which is then filled with water to decrease the space in your stomach.
  • Weight loss surgery. Also called bariatric surgery, weight loss surgery reduces how much food you can consume. Common surgery options include:
    • Adjustable gastric banding. The surgeon places an inflatable band around the stomach to divide it into 2 pouches then pulls the band like a belt to make a narrow pathway between the pouches.
    • Gastric bypass surgery. The surgeon makes a small pouch at the top of your stomach then cuts your small intestine below your main stomach and connects it to the new pouch.
    • Gastric sleeve. The surgeon removes part of your stomach to make a smaller reservoir for your food.
  • Other treatments for obesity. Other obesity treatment options include:
    • Hydrogels. Hydrogels are edible capsules with tiny particles that absorb water and grow larger in your stomach.
    • Vagal nerve blockade. This procedure involves implanting a weight loss device under the skin in your stomach area.
    • Gastric aspirate. This involves placing a tube through your abdomen into your stomach.

Your provider can discuss and personalize all treatments for you after diagnosis.
