An online medical consultation is a licensed clinician reviewing your history, asking questions, and deciding on a plan while you sit somewhere else. HHS calls this telehealth: you talk by phone or video, send secure messages, or share readings such as blood pressure from home (Telehealth.HHS.gov).

People search “online medical consultation,” “online consultation and prescription,” and “GP online consultation” for the same idea: a clinician who can diagnose, advise, and sometimes prescribe without you sitting in a waiting room.
HHS says a telehealth visit is like a regular visit except you sit in one place and the clinician sits in another. It can save travel and time. It is not right for every condition (Telehealth.HHS.gov).
A consult typically includes:
For the minute-by-minute visit flow, see our online doctor visit guide. This article stays on what a consultation is, how formats differ, and when a chat is not enough.
These products often share a landing page. They are not the same service.
If the product never asks your location, medicines, or allergies, treat it as information, not care.
HHS groups telehealth into a few everyday formats (types of telehealth):
A “consultation” in clinic language can also mean one clinician asking another for advice. That is a specialist-to-specialist note. The consumer search usually means you talking to a clinician yourself.
Telehealth works best when history and a camera exam are enough to decide safely. Common reasons people book an online medical consultation:
NIMH notes that depression treatment typically involves psychotherapy (in person or virtual), medication, or both (NIMH depression publication). Medicare lists outpatient psychotherapy and depression screenings among covered telehealth services (Medicare.gov).
A consult can end with no prescription. That is still a medical visit if the clinician documented a plan.
HHS is direct: telehealth is not right for every condition (Telehealth.HHS.gov). Go in person or to emergency care when you have:
If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org. In a life-threatening situation, call 911 (NIMH).
HHS patient tips before a virtual appointment (Telehealth.HHS.gov):
For video, HHS also tells you to adjust lighting, keep the device still, center your face, and close extra apps so the connection stays stable.
Coverage for an online medical consultation may vary by plan, network, and whether the visit is coded as an office visit, e-visit, or virtual check-in. Verify benefits before you assume a $0 bill.
Medicare Part B covers certain telehealth services. Through December 31, 2027, you can receive many of those services from anywhere in the U.S., including home. After you meet the Part B deductible, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. For most telehealth services you pay the same amount you would in person (Medicare.gov).
Medicare Advantage plans and some Original Medicare providers may offer extra telehealth benefits. Ask the plan, not the ad on a search page.

Klarity Health connects patients with over 2,000 licensed providers for telehealth evaluation, follow-up, and many prescriptions. A visit can support online prescriptions, mental-health care, and common primary-care problems when a camera exam is enough.
Some needs still require an office, a lab, or a specialist. A responsible consult says that out loud and refers you. Controlled-substance rules and state licensure still apply. HHS notes that authorized clinicians may prescribe controlled substances via telehealth only when they meet current criteria, and that licensure varies by state (HHS telehealth policy).
Most patients use the phrases interchangeably. “Consultation” sometimes sounds more formal. The visit still needs a licensed clinician, a history, and a documented plan. See our online doctor visit article for the visit itself.
Often, if the clinician can make a safe decision from history and a remote exam. Antibiotics, many antidepressants, and many topical medicines fit that pattern. No legitimate clinician promises a specific drug before they hear your story. Use online doctor prescription when that is your goal, and expect a full consult first.
It may. Marketplace and many employer plans treat telehealth as an outpatient visit. Medicare Part B covers many telehealth services through December 31, 2027 from home, typically at 20% after the deductible (Medicare.gov). Verify your copay and whether the platform is in network.
Some visits work by phone. Others need video so the clinician can see a rash, breathing, or how you look. Medicare allows audio-only communication in some cases (Medicare.gov). Ask the clinic which format they use for your complaint.
Ask the price first. HHS says clinics may have local resources if you cannot pay or have no insurance (HHS). Sliding-fee community health centers and 988 crisis support are separate from a billed consult.
