UnitedHealthcare commercial plans in California may cover some obesity evaluation, nutrition counseling, and prescription weight-loss medications. Coverage typically depends on your specific plan, BMI and comorbidity criteria, prior authorization, and the OptumRx formulary. This guide explains how California parity and telehealth rules interact with pharmacy benefits, what GLP-1 and stimulant-adjacent weight-loss drugs often require, and how to verify benefits before you book.

Disclaimer: Insurance coverage varies by plan, employer group, and year. Nothing here is a guarantee of payment. Confirm benefits, prior authorization, and in-network status with UnitedHealthcare and OptumRx before you start care.
Federal mental-health parity (MHPAEA) and California SB 855 (Health & Safety Code § 1374.72 / Insurance Code § 10144.5) mainly govern mental health and substance use disorder benefits. Obesity pharmacotherapy is often classified as a medical or pharmacy benefit, not an MH/SUD benefit. Do not assume SB 855 forces GLP-1 coverage.
California telehealth payment rules in Insurance Code § 10123.85 typically require plans to cover telehealth on the same terms as in-person care when the service is otherwise a covered benefit. That can help with a medically necessary obesity visit. It does not by itself put Wegovy or Zepbound on the formulary.
Knox-Keene HMOs are regulated by the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC). Many PPO and insurance products are regulated by the California Department of Insurance (CDI). CDI consumer line: 1-800-927-4357.
Most fully insured and many ASO UnitedHealthcare commercial members use OptumRx. Always check your plan’s current PDL:
CHAMPVA and some federal programs explicitly do not cover GLP-1s for weight loss. That is a different payer from commercial UnitedHealthcare in California. See the VA CHAMPVA note.

Most GLP-1s used for weight management are not DEA scheduled. Phentermine and Qsymia are Schedule IV. Federal telemedicine flexibilities from HHS/DEA currently allow many controlled-substance prescriptions via telehealth through December 31, 2026, subject to DEA, PDMP, and California Medical Board rules. Plans can still require an in-network prescriber or deny the drug even when the visit is legal.
Klarity connects California patients with 2,000+ licensed providers for online evaluation and medication management when clinically appropriate. We do not promise that UnitedHealthcare will pay. We help you complete a visit you can then submit according to your plan rules.
