Clonazepam is a controlled substance, so it requires a valid prescription from a licensed medical provider. You can get evaluated online through platforms like Klarity Health, where you can connect with a mental health professional such as a physician or psychiatrist (MD), physician assistant/associate (PA), nurse practitioner (NP), or psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP).
A provider can discuss your symptoms, history, and goals and, if appropriate, prescribe clonazepam and send it to your local or online pharmacy.
Clonazepam and brand name Klonopin are available as an oral tablet and an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT). Oral ablets are available in 0.5, 1, or 2 milligram strengths, while ODT tablets are available in the same strengths plus 0.125 milligrams and 0.25 milligrams. The starting dose for seizure management is less than 1.5 milligrams per day divided into 3 doses. Your provider can increase your dose by 0.5 to 1 milligram every 3 days until your seizures are controlled or side effects prevent you from increasing the dose. The maximum daily dose is 20 milligrams per day, which is taken in divided doses. The daily dose should be divided equally into three daily doses for seizure management. If they can’t be divided equally, the largest dose should be taken before bed.
For panic disorder, the starting dose is .25 milligrams twice daily. After three days, your provider may increase your dose to 1 milligram. Generally, this is effective in controlling panic disorder, but if your symptoms aren’t under control, your provider may incrementally increase your dose by 0.125 milligrams to 0.25 milligrams in twice daily increments every 3 days until panic disorder is controlled, until side effects prevent further increases in dose, or you reach the maaximam recommended daily dose of 4 milligrams. If you need to stop clonazepam, your provider will gradually decrease your daily dose by 0.125 milligrams every 3 days to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and not crushed or chewed. They can be taken with or without food. Orally disintegrating tablets should be placed in the mouth as soon as you open the package. Then, let them completely dissolve and swallow. You shouldn’t need to take them with water as they dissolve quickly.

Clonazepam is one of several medications used to treat anxiety and panic-related conditions. While it shares similarities with other benzodiazepines like alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan), it differs in how long it lasts and how quickly it takes effect. Buspirone, on the other hand, is not a benzodiazepine but a non-sedating anxiolytic that works differently and takes longer to become effective.
Medication | Onset | Duration | FDA-Approved Uses | Common Side Effects |
Clonazepam | 60 min | Up to 12 hours | Panic disorder, seizures | Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue |
Alprazolam | 30 min | Up to 6 hours | Anxiety, panic disorder | Sedation, fatigue, coordination issues |
Lorazepam | 20–30 min | Up to 8 hours | Anxiety disorders | Drowsiness, confusion, weakness |
Buspirone | 2–4 weeks | Taken daily | Generalized anxiety disorder | Dizziness, nausea, headache |
Clonazepam is usually preferred when long-lasting anxiety or seizure control is needed, while alprazolam (Xanax) works faster, making it useful for sudden panic attacks, but requires more frequent dosing. Lorazepam (Ativan) has a balance of quick onset and moderate duration and is often used for acute anxiety. An alternative to benzodiazepines entirely is buspirone, a non-habit-forming option for generalized anxiety, but it doesn’t work immediately, often taking several weeks to reach full effect.
