About chlordiazepoxide (Librium)

About chlordiazepoxide (Librium)

What is chlordiazepoxide?
Chlordiazepoxide oral capsules were U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved in 1960 to treat mild to severe anxiety, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and pre-operative anxiety and apprehension. The medication can treat and manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, agitation, and seizures. The brand name for chlordiazepoxide is Librium.

Chlordiazepoxide also has a number of off-label uses. These off-label uses include the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), seizures, muscle tension, and insomnia. Insomnia means difficulty either falling or staying asleep, or both.

Chlordiazepoxide belongs to a medication class known as benzodiazepines, which are typically used to treat anxiety disorders. Benzodiazepines are depressant medications that help decrease seizures, relieve muscle spasms and anxiety, and produce hypnosis and sedation. Some other examples of benzodiazepines include Klonopin (clonazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), Halcion (triazolam), Xanax (alprazolam), and Valium (diazepam).

How to get a chlordiazepoxide prescription online?

Want to get a chlordiazepoxide prescription online? Here are the steps you need to take to get a chlordiazepoxide prescription online:

  • Schedule an appointment with an online provider. Meet with a board-certified healthcare provider online during a telehealth visit and get a chlordiazepoxide prescription. You might need to meet with a board-certified healthcare provider in person first, depending on the state laws in your area. Healthcare providers who can prescribe chlordiazepoxide include medical doctors (MDs), including primary care physicians and psychiatrists. Nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates (PAs) can also sometimes prescribe chlordiazepoxide, depending on your location.
  • Talk to your provider about your condition and treatment. Your healthcare provider can figure out if chlordiazepoxide is a medically appropriate treatment for your condition. Find a board-certified and licensed healthcare provider on Klarity Health in as little as 24 hours. During your online appointment with your licensed healthcare provider, you can discuss a tailored medical treatment plan for your condition, including medication.
  • Pick up chlordiazepoxide at the pharmacy. Once you get a chlordiazepoxide prescription online, your licensed healthcare provider can send the prescription to any pharmacy. You can also choose to send or take the prescription to a pharmacy on your own.

Chlordiazepoxide dosages and how to use it

Chlordiazepoxide comes in an oral capsule formulation. It’s available as 5-milligram, 10-milligram, and 25-milligram oral capsules. Chlordiazepoxide dosages vary, depending on the primary use:
• Adult dosages for anxiety. The recommended adult dosage for mild to moderate anxiety is 5 or 10 milligrams, taken as an oral capsule 3 to 4 times per day. The recommended dose for severe anxiety is 20 or 25 milligrams, taken orally 3 to 4 times per day.
• Adult dosages for light sedation. The recommended adult dosage for pre-operative anxiety and apprehension on the days before surgery is 5 or 10 milligrams, taken as an oral capsule 3 to 4 times a day. The suggested dose for pre-operative medication is 50 to 100 milligrams, given as an intramuscular injection 1 hour before the surgery begins.
• Adult dosages for alcohol withdrawal. The recommended adult dosage for alcohol withdrawal is 50 to 100 milligrams, taken 1 time orally and followed by repeat doses as needed until agitation is controlled. The maximum dose for alcohol withdrawal is 300 milligrams per day.
• Geriatric dosage for anxiety. The typical geriatric dose for anxiety is a 5-milligram oral capsule, taken 2 to 4 times per day.
• Pediatric dosage for anxiety. The recommended pediatric dose for anxiety for children who are at least 6 years old is 5 milligrams, taken orally 2 to 4 times per day.

Follow the instructions on your prescription label. Don’t share chlordiazepoxide with anyone else, particularly if they have a history of substance abuse. Don’t stop taking chlordiazepoxide without speaking to your healthcare provider about it first and developing a gradual tapering plan.

Store chlordiazepoxide at room temperature away from heat and moisture. You should also keep it in a safe place where someone else can’t use it improperly.

If you miss a dose, take the dose as soon as possible, or skip the dose if it’s nearly time for your next dose. Don’t take 2 doses of chlordiazepoxide at the same time.
