Understanding ADHD symptoms

There are 3 main types of ADHD — predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined ADHD. Common symptoms across types in adults include:

  • Difficulty focusing or staying focused or being restless
  • Being hyper-focused on a single task or situation
  • Procrastinating or being unable to start something
  • Fidgeting or squirming, impulsivity, and/or trouble prioritizing
  • Inattentiveness
  • Disorganization and poor time management
  • Overlooking or missing details
  • Forgetfulness
  • Low tolerance for frustration and a quick temper

Symptoms in children can be different. And there are less common ADHD symptoms in adults.

How ADHD is diagnosed

ADHD is diagnosed by a medical or mental healthcare professional. There’s no simple or single test. Instead, a trained, licensed provider will:

  • Take your history and interview you about your current symptoms and when they started.
  • Ask about your medical and mental health history and current status.
  • Use any of several standardized behavior rating scales, known as ADHD screeners or quality of life assessments, as criteria for evaluating you.
  • Possibly have you take psychological tests to assess your memory, executive functioning, visual and spatial skills, and/or reasoning skills.
  • Sometimes, and with your permission, talk to or interview people you know (like a caregiver or partner) who’ve seen how your symptoms impact you.

Common ADHD treatments

Licensed medical professionals on Klarity Health work with you to create an in-person or online ADHD treatment plan tailored to you. Your provider may recommend medications like Adderall, Ritalin, Strattera, or Kapvay, behavioral counseling or therapy, skills training, and/or lifestyle changes.

A combination of ADHD treatments — particularly medications and counseling — is considered the most effective treatment approach for ADHD. Find providers on Klarity Health for both.

ADHD medications

The 2 main classes of ADHD medication are stimulants and non-stimulants.

Stimulants for ADHD

  • Promote alertness, focus, thought, effort, and motivation
  • Provide rapid symptom relief, often within hours of the first dose
  • Are typically the first-line treatment
  • May cause addiction and be misused

Common stimulant medications

  • Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine)
  • Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine)
  • Ritalin (methylphenidate)
  • Concerta (methylphenidate hydrochloride)
  • Focalin (dexmethylphenidate)

Non-stimulants for ADHD

  • Help with attention, working memory, impulsive control, and hyperactivity
  • Can take several weeks to be fully effective
  • Are ideal for people who can’t tolerate stimulants
  • Are less likely to cause addiction or be misused

Common non-stimulant medications

  • Strattera (atomoxetine)
  • Intuniv (guanfacine)
  • Kapvay (clonidine)
  • Qelbree (viloxazine)
  • Wellbutrin (buproprion)
